Deep Freeze Over–Snow Begins

Our time in the cold chamber has ended, with a bottom limit of -36 C (almost -35 F) and we all survived, as Canadians in this neck of the country do.  The benefit of these extreme temperatures is that it is too cold to snow.

This morning, the temperature rose to -6 C and the air that has been stuffed with moisture from the past week and change, is now shedding that moisture as snow.  Big, fat, fluffy flakes of snow landing on top of frozen snow.  The ‘I wish school would close today’ kind of snow you remember as a child is coming down heavily lining branches on the crab apple tree, covering the car and whitening all the grey frozen streets.

In sixty days or so, we’ll be in the throes of Spring.  For today, we’re enjoying, as best we can, the snow of our childhood.

Clones II

Just read a story on CNN.com (link broken, so try Wikipedia)regarding cc. the Cloned Cat.  She was named cc. for Carbon Copy, as she was cloned from a cat called Rainbow.

They are different colours, both calico cats, but not the same colour patches, so that gene doesn’t work.  Personality?  I know many of us here have cats, so we can talk about that easily.

Rainbow is a bouncy thing, curious, etc.  cc. is quiet and reserved.  Rainbow, the donor DNA is slim and trim and cc is a bit of a pudge.  DNA testing proved that Rainbow and cc are identical cats and the whole deal was done at Texas A&M University, which is a fairly reputable place, not affiliated with an alien race, unless you consider Texas to be alien. (Insert your own joke here, this is an interactive posting by the way…)

Which I think opens up the whole Nature/Nurture argument.  Assuming we had some Adolf Hitler DNA around could we brew up another?  Based on Rainbow and cc, the first answer is no and thank you Deity of Choice that the mythical experiment fails.  So how much is of a person is DNA sequencing and how much is how they are raised?

I tend to side that Nurture is more of a determinant in how we develop as humans.  For example, my brother and I come from the same genetic material and approximately the same upbringing.  However, I was the firstborn and since kids don’t come with manuals for raising them, my parents made their first mistakes on me.

Six years later, they made a different set of mistakes with my brother.  Welcome to parenting.  Consequently, my brother and I are totally different people in temperament, abilities and any other measurable parameter you might choose.  We share a sibling resemblance, but we even have different hair lines last I looked, so common donor DNA is at best, a flaky matchup.

It looks like you can’t get an exact duplicate through cloning.  There are too many parameters and outside influences that determine the whole of the person and the personality, which is what people who want to clone their pets, for instance, really want.  The Rainbow and cc experiment was initially developed because some guy with too much money wanted to clone his favourite collie, Missy, before she died.

A noble sentiment, as most of us have pets who have passed on, that we sorely miss and would love to have back.  But the Rainbow/cc science shows that it doesn’t really work that way.  We have known this, intuitively, just by looking at our siblings and seeing the differences.

I’m going to set aside the whole ethical thing for a moment here.  Why couldn’t we use this technology of making exact genetic duplicates to make spare parts?  If you caught your arm in a punch press, or forgot to turn off the mixer before you licked the beaters, the clone is a perfect source of parts.  The added benefit is not having to take immunosuppressive anti-rejection drugs for the rest of your life, as the spare from the clone, will not be rejected by the body as it IS the body, at least genetically.

Taking this to a more logical conclusion, Type O blood is a universal blood:  If you need a transfusion, you can take Type O, regardless of what your blood type is in the vast majority of cases, which is why Canadian Blood Services wants lots of Type O around.  Could we engineer spare organs and parts that are like Type O?  They’ll graft into the vast majority of people without anti-rejection drugs and about all you’ll have left is a bit of a scar from the surgery?

There is the real Brave New World border.  Essentially eternal life, swapping out body parts that age, get damaged or stop working.  We already do it with hearts, lungs, kidneys, livers, bone marrow, skin and eyes.  If you believe that the brain is the bag of water and flesh that determines the person and personality, then moving it to another chassis is just a few years away.  Perhaps ten years.  Welcome to the future my friends.  We are now here.

Deep Freeze

There are some joys to being Canadian.  One of which is scaring our American neighbours with some of our spellings, of things like neighbour, colour, honour and cheque, where we use the British spelling.  Or, the pronunciation of ‘Schedule’ rather than ‘Sked-yule’, which means, by pronunciation, I woke up this morning and had a schit and a pisch before I made the coffee.

The BigFun-YankeeFrightener is the weather.  I just eyeballed the weather for the next five days for Ottawa.  Daily high temps start at -11C and drop to -19C by Wednesday. Those are the high temperatures, not the lows and don’t take into account wind chill.  In Ottawa, we call it Winterlude Weather, as it always seems to land during the winter carnival called Winterlude and naturally American tourists think that we have this all year-round.

Please be assured, dear American friends, this is the two or three weeks a year in Ottawa that Mother Nature just up and tries to kill you.  The other 49 or so weeks are Temperate, Too Damn Hot, Not Bad, Wet or Construction and Road Work.

There are other colder national capitals in the world.  Ulan Bator in Mongolia is it compared to Ottawa.  Even Helsinki and Reykjavik are warmer, but we like it here most weeks, except the next one or two or three.

Raytheon Presents: The Gulf War II, brought to you by Lockheed-Martin

Things are looking, essentially, like we’re going to strap on the guns and go a huntin’.  The ostensible reason is Saddam Hussein has Weapons of Mass Destruction that he might let loose in the Gulf Neighbourhood Playground.

In a children’s context:  There is a neighbourhood bully who is scaring the shit out of the rest of us kids.  He thumbs his generous nose at the parents (the UN) and the daycare workers (the weapons inspectors) and tells all the other kids that he’s got a big booger in his nose that he’ll hock up and gob on anyone who doesn’t join his team.  OK, so what do we do now?

Simply put, all the other kids are getting together and the biggest kids are going to beat the crap out of the bully, then kick him out of the playground.  Very Lord of the Flies, but that is how it works at a child level.  It has worked that way, the playground dynamic, since the dawn of time.  Except when its country against country we give it names like The Great War, or World War II, or the Korean Conflict, or a Police Action, or Desert Storm, or Peacekeeping.

We don’t really need to examine the ‘real’ reasons for the coming conflict, as they are simple to state:  Big Oil, Big Business, Big Economy Boost and Distraction From Shit We Haven’t Fixed At Home.  Thinking too much on this can make you too jaded, so in the interest of mental health, let’s just stick with the playground analogy.  Otherwise, we’ll wind up posting on alt.conspiracy.gulfwar 100 hours a week.

Let’s follow this to its logical conclusion:  The bully gets his ass kicked and everyone who takes him on, gets to put boogers in his hair, make him cry and give him a wedgie that he will never forget.  Now, the good kids run the playground and the rest of the kids who didn’t get into the scrap can say they were with us all along.

We’ll feel good about doing something for ourselves.  The bully will go away.  The playground will return to its usual level of fear and panic and unpleasantness.

Except over in the other corner of the playground, we’ve got some Korean kid that doesn’t have a bike, or nice clothes, but he’s got a bottle rocket and some matches.

Humankind always needs some kind of bad shit happening to keep it angry.  I have yet to see one societal group, either contemporary, or historical, who have lead the pacifist path with consistency.  The Playground Ethos always applies

Things Dr. Phil Never Says On TV

Here are the edited outtakes you’ll never hear from our homespun Doc.

“Get off my stage you ignorant white trash goat roper”

“Your story makes me think you’re just a spoiled little pissant who needs a beating”

“I bet your momma didn’t love you enough, am I right?”

“If what your tell me is true, then you really should kill yourself.  Here’s a rope…”

“Pull my finger…come on, its part of your therapy….go ahead…pull my finger…”

“You say you feel more comfortable in a woman’s sexual identity right?  Well..You’re a fag then.  A big, bearded, tattooed blue cocktail dress wearing fag. And you deserve whatever hell befalls you, including an enlarged anus from being buttloved by lumberjacks.”

“If my wife ever said that to me, I’d smack her in the mouth with a wet boot.”

“If I did that, I’d wake up in the kitchen in a pool of blood, with my wife sayin’ ‘How do you reload this fucking thing’ “

“Your sister in law is really telling you, she wants a threesome with your wife and you.  It’s just natural…”

“You’re tellin’ me that money is important to you.  Well, for starters, I’d be paying your husband to make love to you and get him a Screen Actors Guild card, because you are the ugliest human being I have ever seen.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he fucks you with someone else’s dick…”

“My, but those are the nicest set of titties I have ever seen on this program…”

“Well, in my experience, the real reason you’re unhappy is that you are just unhappy because you suck at life.”

“I’m gonna come back and visit in 90 days to see if you’ve got things back on track.  Now, if you can’t control the stealing, I could use a big TV for my house…”

“I think if you ask most of our audience here today, they might very well agree with me that lighting your, well let’s just call them what they are, farts, in church, during services, is just wrong…”

“Who let you in here?  Was it your momma?  Well, come on over here to Doctor Phil and I’ll give you 10 dollars for a lap dance, rather than your usual 5…”

Clones

I’ve followed the clone thing for a number of years, actually since the first in-vitro baby, Emily (?) Steptoe about 25 years ago.  Apparently she’s perfectly normal, but at the time, ethicists and scientists were all concerned that she would be odd, or misshapen and have an extraordinary fear or affinity for Pyrex glassware.

None of the those things turned out to be true.  This clone baby is merely an extension of in-vitro fertilization, except there was no sexual reproduction involved: Nobody laid back on one elbow and said “ahhhhhhh”.

Dairy cows, who must be pregnant in order give milk, never really get the business end of the bull in most commercial herds.  Oestrus and Insemination are commercial tasks handled by medical intervention and we get cheese out the other end of the concept.

Same with Genetically Modified Organisms.  Humans have been doing this for thousands of years.  Your tomato on your sandwich at noon is a hybrid, a cross-breed of taste, durability, ripening and ship-ability.  The great, Canadian McIntosh Apple is a GMO.  The Mac does NOT exist in nature. Red Durum Wheat is a hybrid that does not exist in nature.  For that matter, all dogs are hybrids, bred for hunting, retrieving, or companion animals.  So the GMO concept is just a more commercialized version of what we’ve been doing all along.

Cloning, as best I can tell, from the pure science side of the subject, is really just plant grafting with a little more control and some closer monitoring of what will come out the other side.  Reducing the chance of an odd hybrid, so to speak.

Ethically?  Well, that’s a later  post….

Claymation Pulls The Pin

Of course he resigned, Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott, pulled the pin on his career grenade last week and finally let go of the spoon yesterday.  He really had no choice, as he came across in his Black Entertainment Television (BET) Public mea culpa as a “Crossing Over” audience member channelling George Wallace.

Then Dubya had a chat with him.  Lott faced two choices with Dubya:  Resign, or become Colin Powell’s Valet and Bootblack.  Since Powell likes shiny shoes and good creases in his shirts, Lott took Choice One.

I suspect Lott will employ the Gore Stratagem.  Go away for a while, then come back and stare wistfully off into middle distance.  I can almost see Trent Lott with a tight curl perm, in a Pendleton shirt, well-worn jeans, used Rockports, sporting a Fu Manchu and a ‘doo rag.  His new job?  Admissions Director for Bob Jones University.

Although its a lovely dream, the reality is he’s going on the Rubber Chicken Circuit as a lecturer at $5,000 a pop.  This should keep him in marine epoxy for a few years ensuring his legacy of Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow.

The real legacy is that the media will not brook even the potential of politically incorrect stain on your record.  If your Daddy’s Daddy belonged to some organization that was/is not PC today, then you’re just as guilty, even if you, personally have never been a member.  The excuse for this I heard more than once from learned commentators was:  “The Apple Doesn’t Fall From The Tree”, which is utter nonsense.

But it seemed to suffice as reason enough to pillory Lott as a sheet-wearing, cross burning, night-riding, fire hose-waving zealot who stood beside Bull Connor and had his own autographed Louisville Nightstick.  Which is also, utter nonsense.

Now, I refuse to defend Lott, as he is an idiot and so far right he makes Nixon look like a Libertarian, but I can’t get past then zealotry of the media in pursuing him because it is a slow new week.

The part that scares me, is since the late 70’s, the majority of North Americans get almost all their news from Television.  A Roper Poll (mid 80’s or so) placed Television News at the top of the list for credibility, honesty and believability with viewers.  Not just by a few percentage points either, it was something like four times more credible than newspapers, radio, magazines and books.

If that doesn’t scare you.  Then nothing will.

Trent Lott

Trent Lott, who looks like an early Gumby model, especially in the hair department, is not wining The Smartest Man award this year.  Mister Claymation put his foot all the way into his mouth regarding his segregation comment at Strom Thurmond’s birthday thing.  Lott is an idiot and always has been an idiot, so I can’t get too bent about it: “Stupid is as stupid does” to quote Forrest Gump.

But here is the real point:  Despite what the politically correct might think, historically, America and (to a lesser extent) Canada, have been extraordinarily racist for most of their history.  There is no excuse for racism.  Hating someone just for their colour or heritage is silly.  Get to know the person first, then hate them for specific behaviours or beliefs.

At various times in the history of both countries, we have hated Irish, Poles, Blacks, Hungarians, Jews, Chinese, Japanese, Jews again, Catholics, Protestants, English, New Zealanders, Latvians, French, Chinese again and have actually passed laws disenfranchising them, or limiting their immigration, or passing laws that preclude their owning land, farming or having government jobs.

Humans are essentially xenophobic.  We like others who are like us.  Wind back the time machine and you’ll probably see Cro-Magnons with the same features and values hangin’ together.  It still happens today:  Chinatown, Little Italy, Little Saigon, Poletown, Greek Town, Scarberia, BarbecueHaven, The Glebe…ad nauseum.

Since we can’t change history (People were killed, in my lifetime, just because they were of a certain pigment) and Humans won’t change, we can only accept the fact that ‘we’ as a society have done some really stupid things IN THE PAST.

So, to everyone who gets bent with non-PC statements of fact:  That was then.  This is now.  Judge me on my actions today, not what my great-great-great-great grandmother thought, did, or didn’t do.  And get over it.  To quote Colin Powell approximately:  “Racism is the other guy’s problem, not yours.”

What Would Jesus Drive–New Testament Revisited

If Jesus came back today and tried to do the things he is purported to do in the New Testament, would he have a car?  Of course.  Now, what kind of car?

Some well-meaning eco-nuts have tried to argue that Jesus would never get a SUV because the dreaded SUV is a gas pig, a symbol of conspicuous consumption and bad for the environment as it can be used to drive over spotted-owl endangered species habitat and wetlands.

Well, assuming Jesus does as he did in Jesus V 1.0, spend the first 30 years or so of his life, more or less incognito, then he’d be an insurance agent in New Jersey.  Longish hair, beard, Birkenstock sandals, weekend jeans, probably a pierced ear and a Greenpeace t-shirt.  Sounds like a Volvo driver. A Volvo Station Wagon.

Shirt and tie during the week.  Might even be a member of the Lions Club or Kiwanis.  Has a “titties and beer” night with the boys about once a year and probably gets a hooker when he’s in Atlanta for the Insurance Agent Convention every February.

I think that if Jesus did come back and do the thing again, the first time he got out of the car in Cookeville, Tennessee or Gatlin, Texas, the locals would either shoot him, shun him as a Yankee Lunatic Socialist or offer to give him directions to the fastest way out of town.

If he did get the whole popularity thing happening, he’d be on Larry King Live with Liza Minnelli and her meat puppet husband along with Michael Jackson.  First forty-five minutes would be plastic surgery, last fifteen of Larry King….Jesus is back.

Next morning, “Good Morning America” “Live with Regis and Kelly” and tape a feature with Maria Shriver for “Dateline NBC”  That afternoon, “Late Night with David Letterman” as the second guest after Billy Crystal.

A week later?  “What happened to Jesus?” on 20/20.  Headlines about “being in rehab” and “Jesus shopping Mall meltdown on shoplifting charges” from the National Enquirer.

A year later?  A comeback, just like Whitney or Mariah or P.Diddy-Puffy-Sean-JLo.

My point? (And I do have one)  In some parts of the world, if Jesus didn’t come back as dinner, nobody would listen to him.  In the Western World, he’d just be another commercial commodity.

What would he drive?  In my world, a military spec HUMVEE with a .50 cal and he’d take absolutely no crap off anyone.

Moron Apology

OK, on behalf of many Canadians, I wish to apologize for the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary calling Geo. W Bush a “moron”

She was talking about her own boss, Jean Chretien (pronounced Zhan Kret-yen for American audiences), who is so well regarded on the International Stage, that when he speaks, the press goes for coffee, answers voice mail, or clips their toenails.

Not to say that our Prime Minister is a moron, as that would be unfair to the truly stupid.  Our PM is a useless old political hack with a 40 year record of pork barrelling, contract pushing, featherbedding, jiggery-pokery and old fashioned graft that is jaw-droppingly stunning even to those who survived the Ceausescu regime in Olde Romania.

Chretien is not a moron.  Geo W. is not a moron either.  Neither can apply for Mensa membership, but they sure do have a certain low cunning that allowed the two of them to get to the highest office each country has to offer. There are three morons in this situation:

One, the PM’s Press Secretary who is so stupid as to be not trusted with scissors or to be near the media.  Will someone please wire her jaws shut?

Two: The voters of Canada, who continue to elect these muck suckers.  We deserve the appellation ‘moron’ because we keep marking the X next to their names.

Three: The voters of the US, both of them who showed up and pulled the lever.  Bush is a logo, just like the Nike swoosh, or Ronald Regan.  You voted for a logo?  Moron.

The answer?  Well, to our US members, don’t get bent out of shape by the PM’s Press Wank calling your C in C a moron.  Consider the source: A Press Wank with as much impact on World Opinion as Barney Fife has on Quantum Mechanics.

To our Canadian members: Will you please try to remember that the best federal governments we’ve ever had in this country have been our minority governments over the years.  Things get done when voters grab their elected representatives by the cullions and threaten to toss them out on the streets.
