The R Word

We’re going to go there.  The R Word means Race.

Race can be talked about, openly, by grownups, as long as one is respectful, supportive, honest and inclusive, which is exactly where we are going to stay, but expect some mild discomfort along the way.

Specifically we’re going to talk about the obvious observation, that Senator Barack Obama is black.

There.  We said it.  Notice the planet is still revolving, gravity still applies, buildings have not fallen over, there has been no rain of flaming frogs from the sky and George W. Bush is still depriving a small West Texas village of their idiot.

The Pundit and Poll Trolls have been talking about something called The Bradley Effect as a shy code-word for a phenomenon where people tell pollsters how they’re planning to vote, but doing something else when confronted with the pencil, voting lever, chad puncher or computer doodle on an actual ballot.

To truly simplify The Bradley Effect and strip away what is being implied, hang onto your socks, here it is:

Will white people actually vote for a black man for the office of President, in America, in November 2008?

There.  We said it.  Out loud.  No sugar coating, no indirect obscure references and no coy batting of eyelashes. It is a difficult question that should make you uncomfortable, especially if you’re white.

(Disclosure:  I’m so White that White people point at me and say “Who’s the White Guy?”  Technically, I’m English-Scottish-Irish-Welsh-American cross-bred with several generations of Ottawa Valley hillbillies.  I rest my ancestral case, M’lord.)

So there sits the question.  For the majority the answer is “Hell, Yes, we will vote for Barack Obama as he is the right person for the job.”

However, there is that percentage that will not vote for Obama.  Not because Barack Obama is the wrong person, or inexperienced, or any number of disagreements with policy, but who will not vote for Obama because he’s Black.

Now, how does that make you feel?  Do you feel queasy or lightheaded?  Sit down for a bit and take a few breaths, you’ll be fine.

We all belong to various races, as race is a taxonomic term that groups very broad physical characteristics by commonality as a short-form descriptor.  Caucasian, African, Semitic, Nordic, South Asian, Asian, Aboriginal, Innu are all terms that describe the collection of physical traits associated with a race.  Ninety-nine percent of the genetics are the same, but we needed a way to describe a Samoan and a Swede in the same sentence.

Unfortunately, the term “race” has been corrupted to include politics, nationality, affiliations and behaviours real or imagined associated with that race, in a hurtful and discriminatory way.  That’s why you are feeling uncomfortable now.  “All Elbonians are horse thieves” is an example of a negative racial statement.  (It’s wrong too:  All Elbonians are goat ropers, not horse thieves.  I’m kidding, relax.)

Now that we’ve defined our terms we can come back to the core question.  Does race matter in the US Presidential Election?

My answer is a very simple No, as race is the dumbest reasons to vote for or against someone.  The potential that any sensible human would even consider voting based on race is repugnant to me as it calls to all the worst aspects of the human animal.  Race voting precludes thinking for yourself and succumbing to very dangerous and very stupid fears.

However, there is a percentage, who vote, who don’t use their brain as anything other than a spacer to keep their ears from touching in the middle of their skulls.

These include people who insist that only small town America is patriotic, or their policy is going to benefit Joe SixPack and Joe the Plumber and The Real America, whatever the hell that is.  This includes pundits who point to The Bradley Effect as a way for some people to vote by race and feel OK about it.

This also includes commentators who claim that Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama solely on a dermal melanin percentage.  This also includes the perpetrators of the Barack “Osama” typographical “mistakes” and the hundreds of other petty, dumb beasts out there.

They’re playing a fear card and a race card in the ugliest way possible, by indirect inference.  They don’t have the courage of their convictions to stand up and be direct about their beliefs.  I’ll give swine like George Wallace and Bull Connor one point for being straight-up Honest-to-God Racists:  At least you knew where you stood with them.

The sleaziest and scummiest are the ones that mouth the pieties of America out of one side of their mouths, while doing a Zarrow shuffle with the cards and getting the Ace of Spades to magically appear every time.  These are fear-mongers of the worst kind.  The kind who stoop to using race as they know they can’t win any other way.

We still have that question sitting out there don’t we?

Will white people actually vote for a black man for the office of President, in America, in November 2008?

I have my answer:  I truly hope that white Americans will vote for a black man for President.  He’s the right person for the job.

Now, you have your say.

Canadian Election Results

We’ve counted the paper ballots up here and the polloi have decided that we want another minority government under Stephen “Steve” Harper.  Don’t worry, dear American readers, I’ll translate later.

No party has a mandate to govern, without the assistance of one or two of the others in a pseudo-coalition, usually bill by bill.  The Conservatives under Harper have a slight increase in seats, while the Liberals got clobbered.  The NDP picked up a few, as did the Bloc Quebecois.  The Green Party was shut out and there are three Independents.

(American translation:  ‘Republicans’ up a bit, ‘Democrats’ eaten for breakfast while the ‘Social Democratic’ and "Quebec Monomania’ party had some increases.  Three independents got in but no Greens. The Canadian Prime Minister is also a sitting member of the House and has to win in a riding in order to lead.  There are 308 seats in the House of Commons and you don’t get a mandate unless you get a majority of the seats. 155 was the magic number:  The Conservatives got 143, close enough to sniff it, but not close enough to kiss it.)

Which means Canada gets more of the same governance we had before, in a House that resounds with playground taunts masquerading as debate, while the committee work grinds to a halt under a heavy mist of bully-boy micromanaging by Harper.  Harper doesn’t care as he rules by fiat, e-mail and memo from the Privy Council Office and the Prime Minister’s Office.

Naturally, the Day After has our pundit class sniffing the entrails looking for something to talk about.  Stephane Dion, the head of the Liberal party showed that making it up as you go, is not the way to win.  At one time, under Trudeau, Chretien and less so, Martin, the Liberals were almost declared the Natural Governing Party with the best political machine going.

When the Liberals put Dion forward as the party candidate, it would seem that the wheels fell off the Big Red Tricycle.  Yesterday, the Liberals proved they couldn’t organize a fart contest at a bean supper.  They didn’t get out the vote and they couldn’t (or wouldn’t) make Dion into a leader that Canadians could tolerate for a few years.

Stephane Dion is photocopying his resume as he did not deliver the raw power of a majority that the Liberals machine needs to keep functioning.  Dion knows that the Night of the Long Knives is coming.  Bob Rae and Michael Ignatieff are holding the door open for Dion to make a hasty, ungraceful exit.

Jack Layton of the New Democrats did well in the last week of the campaign, buying as much airtime as the party could stand.  The NDP was up a bit, seven seats, but Jack is charisma-challenged enough to keep the party in third place.  He’s a nice guy, but he’s no Ed Broadbent.  Or David Lewis.  Or Tommy Douglas.  And never will be.

The Quebec Monomania Party (sorry the Bloc Quebecois) is the political equivalent of a man having three nipples:  No real use, plus one extra as a conversation piece.  Nobody, outside of Quebec cares what Gilles Duceppe has to say, except he has fifty seats that vote as a bloc(k) and can prop up the Conservatives, who hate the Bloc worse than Sin itself.

Which leaves us where?  The Conservatives and the NDP agreeing to play nice with each other for four years, with the Liberals and the Bloc doing incontinent miniature poodle impersonations, pissing all over everything?

That kind of Parliament might work in Political Science class, but Harper refuses to share his toys and insists on governing like the PMO is his own personal Star Chamber, complete with a pentagram of ewe’s blood on the floor.  White smoke issues from a chimney on the Langevin Block and laws are passed Because He Says So.  Woe betide any bureaucrat or Minister who disputes What Is Said by He Who Rules.

Here’s how it will play out.  Harper will continue issuing Orders In Council running roughshod over democracy.  However, this is the third election that Harper, as the sole voice and sole focus of the Conservative party, has not won a majority.  The backroom brokers might not be happy with Stevie as he had not delivered the insane power that a majority gives the advisors.  And he hasn’t done it three times in a row.

The Liberals will implode and come back out from the black hole with Bob Rae in charge after a vicious fight with Michael Ignatieff for the leadership.  Miraculously, the wheels on the Big Red Tricycle will come back on under Bob Rae.

Over at the NDP, the bench strength is slim.  Jack might run one more time in a Federal election, but unless he has some credible Cabinet alternatives, the party is still tilting at windmills.  Unfortunately, the NDP can’t grow credible alternatives, as the House will resort to its’ usual level of decorum.  This is accurately summed up as four annoying children screaming “I know you do but what am I?” at each other while replying with “You suck!”

Gilles Duceppe will pull the pin on his leadership of the Quebec Monomania Party in another year and return to teaching Eye Bugging and Grammar at UQAM.  The Bloc will disintegrate into Montreal and non-Montreal factions that argue over commas and accents in a platform that even the NDP can’t fathom, but make perfect sense in Quebec politics.  It’s like sex with someone in Public Relations:  They sit on the edge of the bed all night long telling you how good it’s going to be, but don’t actually drop the underthings.  Then they go home.

Then there is Elizabeth May of the Green Party.  No seats in Parliament, but at least their percentage of the popular vote is up.  Can she tolerate another four years on the outside looking in, nose pressed up against the door?

Now, if (and there are a lot of ifs here) Rae takes over the Liberal party in the next year, he’ll have three years to build a credible alternative to Harper.  Rae could defeat Harper and the Conservatives in 2012 with a Liberal majority, assuming Rae builds a slate of alternatives to the sideshow exhibits and perambulating brain stems that are the the current Conservative ministers and caucus.

This is assuming Harper sticks around.  He might just quit and toss the entire Conservative party under the bus.  Harper is a technician who has no soul in the game of leadership and has no soul to lead Canada.

How To Get Even With Wall Street III

Using the concept of Quo Bono? (Who Benefits?) regarding our personal spending, we can choose to spend our hard-earned money in such a way that it benefits our local community by deliberately choosing local stores, services and businesses.

Why local?  If your city, town, village, hamlet or unincorporated rural municipality isn’t working, then it isn’t a nice place to live, bring up your kids, work, retire, or simply hang out in, then your life sucks.

Why should your life suck?

Employed, reasonably prosperous people with a half a shred of hope tend not to engage in looting, shoplifting, arson, vandalism, drug turf wars, drive-by gun play, selling their bodily orifices for money, or opening arbitrage accounts.

Working communities are very resilient when things go wrong, as they know they can rely on each other.  Working communities are not afraid of change.  Working communities are willing to offer a hand up, not a hand out, when times are bad.

Working communities encourage citizens to say things like “No” or “Piss off” when offered the new and improved, change you can believe in, more convenient, more economical, larger, faster and better as determined by Wall Street and Big Corporations.

Best of all, working communities scare the crap out of politicians, Wall Street and Big Corporations, as it demonstrates the potential for citizens to actually think and act together, instead of being lead around like cattle.

Therefore, change must come locally first.  Wall Street and Big Corporations do not care about where you live.  You do.

Second, the political class in the US and Canada are as a group, a bunch of lying sacks of shit who will say anything and do anything to get their lips on the money teat.  Unfortunately, we cannot legally euthanize them for the good of society as we would rabid raccoons, chickens with avian flu or cows with Bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Remember that Wall Street got its bailout from politicians.  Did you get a piece of the $700 Billion?  Did you get invited to a spa day and management retreat after declaring bankruptcy, like the folks at AIG did?  Do you have a Gulfstream V business jet at your beck and call?  Is Henry Paulson on your speed dial?

Did your bank call up out of the blue, to give you a couple of months to rearrange your finances and renegotiate your mortgage to a better payment plan that recognizes the way the economy is going?  Did someone from Wall Street offer to share their bonus with you?

Me neither.

We should ensure that those responsible for dumping us in this mess get their attitudes adjusted.  The least offensive way is to take away their money and power.

Politicians need an attitude adjustment and the only one they understand is being voted out of office.  Wall Street and Big Corps?  The only way you can adjust their attitude is to deprive them of money and their buddies in power.

All politics is local.  I didn’t say that, Tip O’Neil said it and he was absolutely right.  Even in national elections with a global focus, what happens in your community is what matters.  Promises of ‘prosperity’ and ‘change’ are just promises, unless the politicians are very specific about what, locally, is going to change.  Promises don’t put money in your pocket, groceries on the table, or jobs in the community.

Politicians at the local, state, provincial and federal levels need to fear that your community is watching them closely and will use the ballot box and the media to keep them in line.  That’s how lobbyists do it.  They engender fear in the politician that the lobby group will contribute massive amounts of money to the opposition if the politician doesn’t play ball.

Which is why we come back to working, local, communities.

Now you have the secret of Quo Bono.  It isn’t actually to slap Wall Street and Big Corporations upside the head, no matter how tempting.

Quo Bono is designed to change the whole game by changing the political landscape, by changing the local landscape, by taking money from Wall Street and mindfully spending it locally where there are real benefits, not benefits for Wall Street.  OK, we do get to slap Wall Street a bit, but not the way they deserve it.

Conclusion?  When you put your hand in your pocket to pay for something, ask yourself; Quo Bono?

The rest will come.

Voting Tomorrow

In Canada we have a federal election to vote in tomorrow.  Our choices are:

A micromanaging bully who does not care if you live or die, unless you are the CEO of a big business.

A life-size Pez dispenser who is making it up as he goes along.  And it shows.

A charisma-challenged social democrat posturing as a leader.  He fronts a party that should be prevented by federal legislation from forming a government.  Opposition, they’re great, but never, ever, in power.

A well-intentioned Green who knows she’s the equivalent of the crew member in Star Trek who wears the red uniform:  The one that is always offed before the first credits.

A monomaniac who can’t change the subject and won’t talk about anything else to a small percentage of the total population.

There are our choices and they suck mightily.  None of the parties involved should be given a majority, especially the Conservatives.  This leaves us with coalition politics where two or three of these soulless beasts gang up to lead us, sort of, in some kind of direction still to be determined.

Now, what to do as a voter?  First off, do not stay home:  Vote.  Even if you have to hold you nose, vote.  Look at the mainstream candidates and vote for the one that stinks the least.  If your mainstream candidates are barely even suitable as organ donors, vote Dope Reform, or local Lunatic Fringe candidate.  No matter what, vote.  If you do not vote, then you cannot complain for the next four years.

Second:  Ignore the party as much as possible and vote for the one that is the most engaged locally.  Not nationally, locally.  Even if they wind up being so high up in the back bench that they get nosebleeds, vote for the one who is locally engaged.

If you’ve got a cabinet minister, or big national presence in your riding, vote against the national; local is what matters, as local is where you live.  Your riding.  Your neighbourhood.  Your community.

Our last word of wisdom?  Don’t Drink and Vote.

How To Get Even With Wall Street II

The crux of How To Get Even With Wall Street is taking a fraction of a second before you buy something and asking yourself Quo Bono (Latin for Who Benefits).  Who Benefits from me giving them my hard-earned money?

If the answer is a big faceless corporation, then should your money come out of your pocket?  Quo Bono means giving your money to local organizations, businesses and groups, where possible.  If you want to be precious, call it Mindful Spending.

The thesis is this:  Wall Street and Big Corporations do not care about you, where you live, your family, your friends, your neighbours, or what you do.  This is obvious, as the $700 billion dollar bailout shows.  That’s where we’re coming from.  Wall Street and Big Corporations hate us, but they need us, as we supply their profits.

The second part of How To Get Even With Wall Street is knowing that the system is rigged for Wall Street’s benefit.  Fine, our politicians let us down, but if the system is rigged, let’s find a way, using that knowledge, to deprive Wall Street of some of your money, with little or no impact on your own life.  Let’s bring the benefits of our money closer to home.  Let’s focus on where we live and work and exist.

Individually, we can choose who gets our money when we buy things.  There’s no barter, or other weird economic voodoo setting up a parallel economy in Quo Bono.  There is no website, membership cards, t-shirts, buttons or secret handshakes.

You can think for yourself and don’t need to be ‘organized’.  You know where your wallet is located and how much money is in it.  You don’t need someone to manage your buying decisions.

We both know that consumer boycotts don’t really work.  Wall Street doesn’t give a fig if consumers rise up. Even the Cesar Chavez – California Grape Boycott was spotty in its results, as enough people bought grapes to keep the growers in business.  Sorry folks.  We know it is almost impossible to opt-out of the economy, but you can use your money strategically.

Quo Bono is pragmatic, from the standpoint of knowing for some things, you have no choice:  Credit cards and pharmaceuticals come to mind.  There are no local (or regional) credit card companies, or pharmaceutical companies.  It sucks, but that’s what we have to work with.

What does work is individual action, which is at the heart of Quo Bono.

When you go to a local store, tell the manager that you are actively choosing to give them the sale, instead of a big box store.  Something along the lines of:

“I’m here to buy things because I know you and your store is part of our community and you do things for us.  I appreciate that, so you’re getting my money.  I’m looking for a…”

I’m willing to bet that the local store owner or manager has never heard anything like that in their entire retail career.  You will probably get exceptional service, or at least a sincere thank you.

You are clearly telling the store that you are mindful of how they behave and what they do for the local community and are very deliberately with malice aforethought, choosing that store, instead of some Wall Street corporation.

So, let’s go back to the previous post and add some extra content:  Creative Complaining.

Creative Complaining is a polite, straightforward and legal method of communicating with Wall Street in a way that leverages the gamed system.

Large corporations spend millions tracking consumer behaviour.  The PR Rule of Thumb is one complaint = ten unhappy folks who didn’t take the time to complain, but are still unhappy.  However, consumers very rarely complain, or spend strategically.  We just do our thing and keep our frustrations inside knowing that ‘things will never change’.  Sound familiar?  Now, let’s use that expected behaviour to our benefit.

Take tomatoes for example.  Have you ever gone to the supermarket manager and very politely asked for more in-season local produce from local producers?  Why not?  Theoretically, that store manager is supposed to give you ‘service’ that makes you feel good enough to keep coming back to that store.  The manager is allegedly on your side.

But the store manager isn’t (or very, very rarely) compensated on service.  He or she is compensated on salesThat’s how the system is gamed:  Move your mouth with the ‘service’ platitudes to distract the customers, but if your sales aren’t going up, you get your head handed to you on a platter.

Back to our example of asking for local produce:  The answer from the manager is usually “We get what head office sends us.  Sorry.”

You now have a choice to make, a Quo Bono decision.  Since the supermarket is not supporting local farmers and the local economy, do you want to give that supermarket your money?  No is a good answer, but there is another step:  Tell them why.

There are three levels of complaint that you could use:

Polite:  “Then I’m not buying tomatoes today, as I don’t want what you have.  Mr. Manager, you’ve lost a sale.”

Mildly Grumpy:  “That’s not the answer that you should give me.  I am a customer in your store, who spends money here.  Please request local produce from your head office.  I am not buying what you have today and you have lost a sale.”

Dave Grumpy: “Since you haven’t offered to complain to head office for me and request more local produce that benefits our community, then I choose not to give you my money for groceries today.  Here’s your shopping cart back.  Thank you.”

Then walk out.  Leave your half-filled shopping cart in front of the manager and walk out the door.

There is no law that says you can’t change your mind in mid-grocery shop, especially if the manager is not being responsive to your needs.  If Mr. Manager wants to call the cops, let him.  The cops will laugh until they drop their coffees and their Tasers.

I’m willing to bet that the Manager will tell his supervisor: “Murray, I had four customers walk away this week!  And two more ripped me one for not having local friggin’ tomatoes!  WTF?”  Using the PR formula, six lost sales = Sixty unhappy customers who didn’t hand over the money.  Yikes!  That’s a bottom line shot.

You might get more local produce, or not, depending on how responsive the head office is.  If they’re not responsive, then don’t give them your money.

If you want to ratchet it up a notch, tell the store manager that you will shop at the competitors, as they carry local stuff:  Competition also scares the crap out Wall Street because a competitor means that store isn’t getting all the money that your and your fellow shoppers have to spend.  You are spreading it around, mindfully, and that cuts into sales.

Sales are what matters.  Not service, not happy customers, not well-stocked shelves.  Sales.  Dollars.  Your dollars.

Another example:  Self-Serve, U-Scan or Customer-operated checkouts.  When a self-serve lane was put in the supermarket where I used to shop, I tried it a few times.  I found a manager and asked if I get a discount for dong the work the store used to do.  He laughed and said that no, U-Scan is the same price.

So, I do the work and I get what?  Convenience?  Actually, an average cashier can scan my stuff and bag it up faster than I can.  I know this to be true as I timed it, more than once.  Try it yourself.  How many items can an average cashier zip over the scanner in 30 seconds, compared to how many you can scan in 30 seconds?  The cashier wins every time.

(Self-serve checkouts are designed to go slower than a cashier, as the technology weighs each item and also weighs the carousel where the bags are hanging.  If you go fast, like a cashier, the system stops you.  The U-Scan technology compares physical weights at the pre-scan and in the bag area.  If the weights don’t add up then something is wrong and the machine screams at you.  Supposedly this ‘reduces shrinkage’ and mis-scanned items, as the machine assumes you are trying to steal stuff by going faster than the machine wants you to.)

If the store gave me 2% or 3% off the total for doing the work, I’d consider using a U-Scan or self-service checkout, but that isn’t going to happen as it cuts into the store profits.

I found the manager a few weeks later and said “I will not use your self-serve checkout, as you are not making it worth my time.  In addition, self-serve means you can lay off people, who need their jobs.  You’re doing nothing for me or my community with your ‘convenience’.  Please tell head office.  Thank you.”

I didn’t yell, scream or act self-righteous.  I chose a course of action and made sure that the manager knew what I am doing and why. The Manger looked at me as if I had just broken the secret code:  U-Scan is a way to lay off employees and increase store profits.  It isn’t more convenient.  It isn’t faster.  It actually hurts the local economy by putting people, who need those jobs, out of work.

But the store and head office promote it as ‘convenient and fast to save you time in your busy day’.  Quo Bono?  Not you, not me and not your local community.

The third part, which includes more creative complaining, will show you a couple more ways to beat the system, by using the gamed system to beat Wall Street over the head with their own hammer.

The Third Presidential Debate (Preview)

Tonight Senators Barack Obama and John McCain go toe to toe in a town hall meeting at Belmont University in Nashville in the second of three debates for the Big Chair in Washington.

A bit more unstructured than the previous debating club exercise with Jim Lehrer, this one promises to be more of a looser, freeform gabfest.  Tom Brokaw from NBC will don the stripes and carry the whistle.  They are even going to take questions from the audience, quelle horreur!

I’m pushing for an even more candid exchange for the third debate.  Ozzie’s Roadhouse on West Mercer in Seattle will be the venue.

McCain and Obama will sit in chairs next to each other, at a table, without suit jackets or their entourages.  Dinner will be served:  Onion Rings and draft Bud.

They will be required by the rules of the debate to consume at least enough beer to make it illegal for them to operate a motor vehicle in Washington State.  There might be karaoke, there might be drinking contests and there are pool tables.  Crappy tables, but pool tables nonetheless.

Obama and McCain will have to play at least one rack of either 8-ball, or Sink or Swim.  They can play more if they want to, as long as they put a dollar in the table.  We’ll buy the first rack and the first round.

We’ll have them both wired for sound and enough cameras to cover all the angles in Ozzie’s.  Then we’ll start the discussions.

Your moderator:  Mr. T.

MR.T:  Hey fool.  I’m Mr.T and this here’s the third presidential debate.  Don’t go touchin’ that remote.  You know who I talkin’ to.  You!

Now sit back and listen up.  We goin’ axt some questions of these two pussies over here.  Alphabetically, we start with Senator John McCain who wants to be President.  And, Senator Barack Obama, who also wants to be President.

If you’d stayed in school you’d know you cain’t have two guys be President at the same time in America, so you gots to vote.  Now, which one to vote for is the question.  That’s why we down here at this joint to figure this out.

The boys played caps earlier and Obama lost, so’s McCain says he’s not going first.  Barry!  First question is yours:

OBAMA and McCAIN are at the pool table, both with their white dress-shirt sleeves rolled up. OBAMA has a cigarette dangling from his bottom lip, while McCAIN is re-lighting a blunt cigar. Several beer glasses and a half consumed jug of draft litter the table behind the billiard table. OBAMA lines up a shot, misses, mutters to himself, then walks over to Mr.T and knocks knuckles with him.

OBAMA: Yo T. Whassup.

MR.T: That’s Mister T to you long boy. You don’t call me T until I says you call me T. You understand me?

OBAMA: Sorry Mister T. What’s up? John and I were playing 8-ball and I had a run going…

MR. T: This is up. Debate night. 8-ball can wait. I got a question to axt you.

OBAMA: OK, ask away.

MR. T: The economy stupid. That’s what’s up. Din’t your momma teach you nothing?

OBAMA: We’ll I can answer that. My momma was a hard-working woman who worked hard. Like all Americans, who work hard, they’re concerned about the economy. And I’m concerned about the economy…

In the background at the pool table, JOHN McCAIN fires a double bank shot at the 8-ball, misses wildly, sinks the cue ball and sewers out.

MCCAIN: Cocksucker!

OBAMA: Screw you McCain, I’m talking here…

MCCAIN: We’re on? Oh shit… Sorry about that. I was, er, my shot, um, and, and I sewered out.

MR.T: Shut up old man! You get your turn next. Barry, you keep goin’ but I be warnin’ you, you best be startin to talk like you got a clue.

OBAMA: The economy is important to every working American…not just the boardroom table but the kitchen table…

Mr.T: Shut up fool! You ain’t tellin us nothin’. It’s your shot, go take your nappy head back over to the table and you come back when I call. Old Man! Get yo’ass over here. Mr.T and America want to hear from you!

MCCAN: Hello Mister T. It is a pleasure to meet you

MCCAIN holds his hand out in a conventional white man handshake. MR.T looks at MCCAIN’s hand like he’s holding out a steaming horse turd. MCCAIN withdraws his hand uncomfortably and sits next to MR.T, while cradling his cue across his lap.

In the background, OBAMA is searching for the cue ball, then sets it on the foul line after taking a long pull from his glass of draft.

MR.T: The economy McCain. What about the economy?

MCCAIN: There’s a lot of interest in the economy and my role in the assistance of the financial industry means I show the leadership needed to…

MR.T: You answerin’ the question or ain’t you?

OBAMA comes over the to interview area, pulls the cue chalk out of MCCAIN’s shirt pocket and walks back to the table. MCCAIN seems slightly distracted.

MCCAIN: Well, I’m a maverick, who isn’t afraid of Washington…

MR.T: You ain’t got a Mohawk. You don’t wear twenty pounds of gold. Y’all shut up about bein’ a maverick Old White Man. Mr.T was a maverick when you was flyin’ crop dusters.

MCCAIN: And I flew over Vietnam…

MR.T: An got your sorry ass shot down. You ain’t no pilot of my plane of the economy. Get the hell outta my face an’ get back to your game, fool!

MCCAIN slinks off back to the pool table. He takes a long pull of his draft and reloads his glass from the jug. OBAMA signals to a server for another jug.

MR.T: Now we got questions from the folks here at Ozzie’s Roadhouse. They wrote them down and we put them envelopes. And we got Julie here to pick the questions at random. She don’t know what they are and Mr.T don’t know what they are. ‘Course them dough-heads don’t know neither.

JULIE, one of the servers at Ozzie’s picks an envelope out of the pile, while balancing two draft pitchers on her tray. JULIE crosses back to OBAMA and MCCAIN with the beer. Both OBAMA and MCCAIN pull out some cash and pay. MCCAIN pulls out a few more bills and hands them to OBAMA, who stuffs them in his shirt pocket. Apparently MCCAIN lost that round at the pool table. OBAMA feeds another dollar into the table and the balls crash out.

OBAMA: You break this time John… I’ll rack

MCCAIN: You’re on…

MR.T: Shut up back there fools! Mr.T is workin’ here. We got Julie to pick us out a random question.

MR.T rips the envelope open and pulls out a slip of paper. He reads the question to himself.

MR.T: Now this is my kind of question. Short and sweet, like little Julie there… Fools! Get over here! Mr.T and America want to know.

OBAMA and MCCAIN cross to the interview area and sit next to MR.T MCAIN and OBAMA have brought their beer glasses and their cues. MCCAIN has his reading glasses propped up on his forehead.

MR.T: This is one of the questions in the envelopes. From regular folks right here. You two clowns ready?

OBAMA: Sure

MCCAIN: Go ahead

MR.T: One word answers only or you both be in trouble with Mr.T. Barry be first. Here’s the question: Iraq?

OBAMA: Out.

MR.T: McCain, same question: Iraq?

MCCAIN: Fucked.

MR.T: Old Man wins that one. McCain you choose another envelope.

MCCAIN holds his hand out. OBAMA grudgingly takes a bill out of his top pocket and hands it to MCCAIN who puts it in his own shirt pocket. MCCAIN picks another envelope.

MR.T: Next question. Old Man goes first. One word answer again. Hockey-Mom or Pit-Bull?

MCCAIN: Pit-Bull.

MR.T: One word answer Barry. Hockey Mom or Pit Bull?

OBAMA: GILF.

MR.T: What the hell is that?

OBAMA leans into MR.T and whispers something.

MR.T: You ARE a dirty dog. Barry wins that round. Pick one!

MCCAIN take a bill out of his shirt pocket and slaps it into OBAMA’s hand with a grimace. OBAMA selects another envelope which MR.T rips open and reads.

MCCAIN: (whispered) That was my answer Goddamit.

OBAMA: (whispered) Yeah, but I said it…

MR.T: This here’s a challenge from Eugene over at the bar. Which one of you ladies can chug one faster? Julie! Top’em up!

JULIE comes over with a jug and tops up OBAMA and MCCAIN’s glasses. Both put down the cues, roll up their sleeves a bit more and get ready with their hands flat on the table on either side of their glasses.

OBAMA: Ready John?

MCCAIN: You’re goin’ down school boy…

MR.T: Ready, set. Go!

MCCAIN and OBAMA grab their respective beer glasses and start chugging. MCCAIN’s glass empties in a blink of an eye, as if poured down a drain, then MCCAIN grabs MR.T’s glass and pounds it down too. OBAMA gags, then spits out his beer, spraying foam everywhere.

MR.T: Holy shit Old Man, how the hell you do that?

MCCAIN: Officer’s Mess at Pensacola….Champion in ‘63 and ‘64. Still hold the Pac Fleet record for the most in one minute. My name’s carved in the bar at Polly’s Palace on Ha Ba Trang Road in Bangkok too. (MCCAIN belches deeply)

OBAMA takes a bill out of his top pocket and slaps it into MCCAIN’s hand. They knock knuckles and swap thumbs up. They may be competitors, but they can appreciate each others’ efforts. OBAMA tries to dry his shirt a bit.

MR.T: Damm that was good Old Man. You choose now.

MCCAIN selects one of the last envelopes. MR.T opens it up and reads it. Twice.

MR.T: Last question and it’s a two parter, so you two fools had best pay attention. America wants to know. Old Man McCain goes first. Two parter.

Betty or Wilma and does the Carpet match the Drapes?

MCCAIN stops dead in his tracks and stares at MR.T

MR.T: We waitin’ McCain…

MCCAIN: Wilma….and…and…No.

MR.T: Homes? Betty or Wilma and does the Carpet match the Drapes.

OBAMA gnaws at his bottom lip, knowing this is the turning point of his campaign. He pauses as if to start speaking, then changes his mind.

OBAMA: My answer. My answer is Betty and Yes. The Carpet matches the Drapes.

MR.T: Julie, come over here and read the answer.

JULIE crosses to MR.T, who is remaining stone-faced. Everyone knows the entire campaign hangs on this one answer. JULIE looks at the answer and asks MR.T

JULIE: Really? Wow. I couldn’t tell.

MR.T: You gotta know these things to be President. Tell’em…

JULIE: The correct answer is Betty and Yes! The Carpet matches the Drapes!

MR.T: Gentlemen. It’s a TIE!

Balloons fall from the ceiling of Ozzie’s Roadhouse as MCCAIN and OBAMA both leap in the air, pumping their fists and hugging each other. Beer is sprayed and poured over both candidates by the other patrons in the bar. Julie is dodging the spray, while MR.T moves down stage to wrap up.

MR.T: That’s the Presidential debate from Ozzie’s Roadhouse. Dead heat tie. Pick either one. This be Mr.T You vote! Vote Early! Vote Often! Peace. Out.

How to Get Even with Wall Street I

In doing some thinking and some reading I think I have come up with a way to get even with Wall Street.  The reason I want to get even with “Wall Street” is simple: Wall Street is a shorthand for the big corporations who have jiggered the game with willing politicians to get around their collective responsibility for our financial mess.

Plus, we’re not allowed to talk about the physical, emotional, cultural and social mayhem that would result in the population rising up and taking control back from politicians who should be driven naked through the streets at the sharp end of a bullwhip.  So, we won’t go there, or even suggest it.  That would be wrong.

I’m calling it the Quo Bono Moment.  Quo Bono means, approximately, Who Benefits, in Latin.

Here’s the nub of it.  When you go to reach into your pocket to pay for something, ask yourself, “Quo Bono?”  Who Benefits from me making this purchase?  Where does my money go?  Does it go to people, or things, or organizations that have my best interests at heart?  Will this money I’m handing over provide benefit to where I live?  Or does this money, that I’ve busted my hump to earn, go to some faceless anonymous corporation to piss all over the place like an incontinent raccoon?

(Before you go off on a “He’s a gol-durn Socialist” rant, I think profit is good.  Very good, in fact.  I just choose to be mindful of who benefits from my contribution to their profit.)

An example or three, should suffice.  Tomatoes.  You can buy tomatoes from just about everywhere in the world at your supermarket.  Costa Rica, California, Chile and sometimes, local growers.  You know that they all taste more or less the same and the prices are more or less the same.  But somewhere in there is a Quo Bono moment that should help your decision regarding which tomatoes to buy.

Tomatoes from Costa Rica have travelled thousands of miles and were probably grown by some peasant getting a dollar per ton of finished product.  Someone in the supply chain is making a lot of money and it isn’t the grower:  The system is gamed to screw the grower and keep them poor.

Therefore, do you want to give your money to a middleman who is raking in gobs of profit for doing nothing except arranging long distance shipping?

Or, do you want to give your money to a local farmer, who actually makes more per pound, as he or she doesn’t have to ship the tomato 1200 miles through some broker and middleman?  Who is more deserving of your money?

In a perfect world, it would be the organic, local grower who also lives in the local economy, employing people, buying things, paying taxes and contributing to the economy.  Ideally, I’d be buying from the farm gate, but that isn’t always practical at 9:30 at night when you want a sandwich.

Quo Bono is, if nothing else, pragmatic.

Gasoline is another Quo Bono moment.  Honestly, it is.  Yes, the gasoline comes from a petroleum oligarchy that is determined to screw you as hard and fast as it can, as frequently as they can.  This is hard to change, but you can still nudge the ship around.  Don’t give money to a gas station that is owned by the oil companies.  Those are called O&O (owned and operated) stations, as in O&O’ed by the corporate head office.

If you want to buy brand-name gas, look for a station that is a franchisee.  A local franchisee.  Look for a station that has a garage attached to it, as odds are the operation might be owned by someone you can walk up to and talk with.

Yes, that local franchisee makes a pittance on the fuel you buy, usually in the realm of 2 to 3 Cents per litre, but that 2 to 3 cents is important.  That profit the local franchisee makes, although small, is going to feed and house the family, pay taxes, put the kids in school and, if profits are good, might even allow that local dealer to sponsor a softball team next summer.

The O&O store?  The local community gets sweet Foxtrot Alpha.  Don’t believe what the head office says.  They are not involved in your community.  Sure, they hire two people and pay them minimum wage, but that’s where it stops.  The profit the O&O makes goes into a big pile in Houston for the executives of the oil company to roll around in while naked.  (I’m making that up, but it isn’t too far-fetched as executive compensation.  Ask the folks at the Department of Energy)

There are holes in Quo Bono and I’ll be the first to admit it.  We don’t have a textile industry, or a cotton industry any more.  The footwear industry is gone, along with office furniture, televisions, consumer electronics and a big piece of the steel industry.  It is harder to buy strategically when entire industries have disappeared, but it can be done.

As an example, the big screen TV you want to buy.  Televisions are no longer made in North America.  They are made in China, Korea, Taiwan and less so, Japan.  You could buy that big screen at any one of the big chains.  You know who they are:  The Smiley Face Place, The Bulls-Eye, The Yellow Price Tag, or any of the regional chains.

Assume you’re at The Smiley Face Place and are ready to put your hand in your pocket to pay for the big TV you want.  Stop and think: Quo Bono?  Answer: A Big Corporation.

Could you buy the same big TV at a local store?  Probably, assuming you have any local stores left.  Would the local dealer (Crazy Ernie’s?) price be the same as The Smiley Face Place?  Probably not, but a price difference of $20 on a $1,200 item is less than 10 percent.

That 10 percent difference means that a local business, (who might even deliver your big TV, set it up for you, as well as take away the box and your old TV for a nominal fee) gets to stay in business, employing people like your neighbours, paying taxes and contributing to your local economy.

(If that extra $20 on a $1,200 item is going to bankrupt you, then you don’t need the TV:  Try buying your kids some food and clothes.  Pay the back rent on the trailer before you’re evicted.)

There are places where Quo Bono does not work.  There are no ‘local’ or ‘regional’ credit cards:  They’re international Big Corporations.  Insurance is Big Corporations, but a few still have local brokers:  Try a local broker.

Banks generally are Big Corporations, but many have local branches that employ a few people.  Go into the branch and actually use a teller (pardon, Customer Service Associate) instead of online banking or the ATM.

I’ve found at my bank, when confronted with a long line at the ATM’s, that even a pudding-headed teller can deposit my cheque to my account faster than I can, waiting in line to use the ATM.  Going to a teller contributes to the usage statistics of the live humans employed by the bank.  Higher usage statistics means a few more branches might actually remain open, employing people.  I not only save time, but I screw the bank out of the ATM ‘convenience’ fee, which feels really nice.

The objective of Quo Bono is to speak to Wall Street and big corporations in the only language they understand:  Profits.  Wall Street and Big Corporations do not care if you like them, but they will do anything to get your money.

In asking yourself Who Benefits, if the answer is Wall Street and Big Corporations, then consider putting your hand back in your pocket and not giving them your money:  It is imperfect, but it is a start.

Quo Bono can’t happen overnight, as big businesses think in terms of financial quarters, at least when it comes to change that affects the bottom line profit.

There is a second component to Quo Bono that I’ll post later this week:  It involves you complaining creatively while using your money strategically.

Quo Bono?

OJ Gets Squeezed

You learn from a certain age the hoary old bromide “What Goes Around Comes Around” is not always true.  Bad Things happen to Good People while the Bad People skate away, untouched.  However, once in a while, the Scales of Galactic Justice tip toward the Good People and there is much cheering in the village.

Specifically, Orenthal James Simpson has been found guilty of charges of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint, in Las Vegas.  Twelve charges were offered up by the prosecution and OJ was found guilty of all twelve, which included kidnapping and robbery as well as ten other lesser charges, like being a dick, being a dick with a gun, using aerosol cheese with felonious intent and illegal use of a comb-over.

The most comforting part of the guilty verdict is the highly likely possibility than OJ Simpson will go to jail for a very long time.  It’s taken almost exactly thirteen years to the day since he was acquitted of killing Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman for the big wheel to come around.

Needless to say OJ has insisted he had nothing to do with the robbery in Las Vegas, or the gun, or the kidnapping.  People like that never, ever, admit to anything.  Perhaps his jail buddies will believe him.

The rest of us, watching the Scales of Galactic Justice whack OJ one upside the head, can enjoy his demise.  It’s wrong to take pleasure in the misfortune of others, but in this particular case, I think the Scales won’t mind.

Mason Baveux Watches the Debates

There was a bit of a scheduling conflict on the tube last night.  The Canadian Leadership Debate was on at the same time as the US Vice-Presidential Debate, essentially 9 pm to 11 pm.  I can watch two car races at once, as I am motivated and card-carrying gear head, but two political debates?  Not in this life.

We called on our 500-channel Universe expert, Mason Baveux to watch both debates at the same time.  I stuck with a book (Morell’s Contract Law for Third Year Students) and called it a night around 2200 hrs.  Here is Mason Baveux’s commentary:

So’s Davey said I could do him a favour and watch both debates one on the US and t’other on Canada, then write‘er up.  Now I don’t follow the politics as close as he does, so I’m gonna get some wrong, but you can figure it out, if you’re smart.

First off, what tool told the CNNers that we wanted to see all that stuff up the sides and bottom of the screens.  They had doodads for their analysts to say good or bad as she went.  The dials went back and forth all the time.

Then there was some bar graphs along the bottom from where they had a bunch of citizens hooked up to electronic things based on their sex (Gettin’ Some/Gettin’ None) and their political twist.  The graph’s would go up and down depending on who said what and how much electricity was goin’ through their heads.  Almost made me dizzy, but I cracked the top of a couple more wobbly-pop and she straightened out by half time.

Now over at the CBC (them holes what lost the rights to the theme for Hockey Night in Canada.  Don’t get me started.) they did ‘er easier.  Big-arse table the shape of an egg with the Leaders around it and Mandy Patinkin as the question guy.  I liked seein Mandy again.  Last time he was on the TV was “Dead Like Me” and he’s lost some weight too.   (Ed.: It was Steve Paikin from TVOntario, not Mandy Patinkin)

The CBC had the leaders around the table and Mandy would shoot questions at them, then they’d have a go at each other.  While over at CNN, they had the two podiers up there one for Biden and one for Palin, with Gwen Iffile in the middle asking questions of each.

Oh, hey, did Gwen Iffiles’ Grandma knit that friggin’ sweater?  Lord thunderin Jesus that was an ugly green.  I seen better colours come out of my nose after an afternoon of layin fiberglass insulation in the attic.

So, the questions:  Neither Mandy nor Gwen asked the really important question of their guests.  Which was, “Are you fer friggin real, or are you piss drunk right now?”  Jesus I’ve heard some bullshitters in my life, especially at the Legion, or when I worked at the plant before going on the disability, but the two Americans wouldn’t answer a straight question if you’da held a gun to a puppy’s head.

All’s I heard was sound bites for the news about how great their Presidential leaders was and how the other guy was a lying sack of crap.  Palin came off like she’s the friend of the Working Man, what they called Joe Six Pack.  Which means you can’t trust her worth a damn.  Six Pack means you’re twelve years old.  There’s twenty four in a case and twenty-four hours in a day.  You figure it out.

Over to the Canadians.  I think someone made Stevie Harper cry before the debates.  His eyes look like he’s just finished watching “Old Yeller” then went on stage.

At the beginning when they introduced the leaders, Stevie Harper looked at the camera and smiled.  Scared the shit out of me.  At least he wasn’t wearing that pigs in a blanket sweater which makes him look like a pigs in a blanket made with a dog turd.

Then there was Stevie Dion.  I wonder when he passed away, as he looked like he was sitting up at his own wake out of the casket.  Liz May and Gilles Duceppe had a run at Harper, ignoring Dion the Dead Guy.  Duceppe looks like someone run an air hose up his arse and inflated him out past 30 psi:  His eyes were all bugged out and his hair looked like he’d been hangin out the window of a car going down the 401 at 130 per.

Liz May, she kept beatin Harper like a gong which was fun to watch for a while, but the fun was when Jack Layton jumped in with both boots and kicked Harper’s ass, then tag-teamed off to Liz May who cut Harper an extra one.

What scared me was Harper would smile at both of them with that half-arsed smile that makes him look like he’s got a weapon, a case of rounds and a high building all picked out if he loses.  Didn’t nobody at the party tell him to never smile?

Harper with a smile on his mug looks like Geecher Brock at the arena did before he drove the Zamboni over to the railroad tracks and waited for the afternoon fast freight to come by.  We had to get a Wintario grant to replace the Zamboni.  We never did replace Geecher Brock as there wasn’t much left and his family buried him in an old Bell Canada reply envelope.  Didn’t hurt the freight train none.

The Americans kept going at each other.  You could tell that Biden was holding it back and not speaking his mind, which might have been fun.  You could also tell what Palin was thinking:  “Jeez there’s lots of folks out here and there’s shiny lights.”

She did good enough but I’m fed up with hearing about hockey-moms.  Palin doesn’t know about real hockey-moms, at least in the Bantam league around here.  There was hockey-mom I saw last season name of Maureen who cold-cocked the ref with a quart bottle of Ex when the ref came over to the timekeepers bench to call a five minute major on her son.

Maureen went over the boards and tried to get the linesmen too, but slipped on the ice so’s we could see she was wearing a tiger-striped thong under her miniskirt.  That was a change, as Maureen didn’t normally wear any gitch.

The cops took Maureen away after gettin out the pepper spray, which only made her madder.  Last we heard she got probation and had to stay away from the arena for the rest of the season.  Constable Kutchkie wears a cup on patrol now, as Maureen got him once while they took her away.

All in all, by 11 o’clock I’d had enough.  Harper got his ass kicked and Palin showed she can mouth off:  She’s no idea what she’s sayin, but she sure can mouth off.  Felt like someone’d filled my ears with Lepage’s mucilage by the time it was done.

Overall, she’s a tie in the US and Jack got’er done in overtime in Canada.

Thank you Mason.  As always, insightful.  Frightening, but insightful.

Bailout The Base IV

The bipartisan Bailout The Base Bill brought to you by President Jo Jo The Idiot Boy and a collection of Democratic and Republican Senators has been regrooved again.

What was a three page manifesto of Henry the FrankenFinancier (“All Your Base Are Belong To Us!”) became 106 pages of stoner-prose (“Freebird Man!  Play fuckin’ Freebird Maaaannn!”) that was shot down by Congress.

We’re now up to 451 pages on the version the Senate is going to vote on.  There’s everything in it, like a Happy Meal for the OCD customer:  You get a banana, a pretzel and a garden gnome with a bit of mustard on the side.  Plus 451 Wet-Naps so you can clean up again and again and again and again.

The only thing that hasn’t been tossed into the new bill is a return to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 and a bailout for beekeepers in Hawaii.  Since the bill has something for everyone, except beekeepers in Hawaii, it should pass.

The “sweeteners” have added another $150 Billion to the Bailout The Base Bill, which is now looking like a Christmas tree decorated by squirrels with ADHD and a JC Whitney catalogue.  The pork includes mental health insurance, increasing the Federal Deposit Insurance Commission minimums, tax benefits for everyone and government-funded satellite-based GIS mapping of Ben Bernanke’s head.

(Note to Ben Bernanke:  Yes, it is dark, brown, warm and smells like Mexican food.  Those shoes above your head contain Henry Paulson’s feet.  The ass you are up is George W. Bush’s.)

Senators Obama and McCain are both in favour of the bill, while their running mates have disappeared.  Biden is being kept under heavy sedation in a car trunk in the parking lot of the Arby’s in Falls Church VA.  Palin is being distracted by the Arctic Cat 2008 catalogue at her training camp in Rockville, MD.

Palin has been working on the speedbag and the heavy bag with Angelo Dundee as her trainer for the Veep debate.  Biden is being fed intravenous Atavan, to keep him from tearing Palin a spare in the first five minutes of the debate tomorrow night.  Palin knows the only way she can win, is to give Biden a good left-right combination to the ribs and ball-shot after the bell rings.  Biden better wear a cup.

Meanwhile the media has a procession of double-chinned pundits, bow-tied economists and mouth-breathing axe-grinders doing double and four-headers with the anchormeat.  So far, the opinions have ranged from “Ick!” to quoting Henry Kissinger for some unknown reason.  Based on the amount of inane babble coming out of the media, the guests are paid by the word.  Dramatically overpaid, but still by the word.

Back at the Ranch, Wall Street finished under relative calm and finished down twenty points, which is a rounding error, more or less.

We await the vote.
